# Course objectives and overview

> Course teaching DevOps engineers to communicate technical work as business value through storytelling, audience adaptation, objection handling, and feedback

Welcome — I'm Michael Forrester. In this lesson we outline the course agenda and learning objectives. You’ll learn how to translate DevOps work into clear business value, present technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders, and measure the impact of your communication.

Course objectives
We aim to equip DevOps engineers and technical contributors to:

* Communicate effectively with non-technical peers and stakeholders.
* Convert technical conversations into concise, business-focused value statements.
* Use storytelling, empathy, and active listening to build trust and alignment.

Who is this designed for?
This lesson is for anyone who needs to connect technical work to business outcomes — engineers, site reliability engineers, platform teams, and technical leads who want to present technical decisions in a way non-technical audiences understand and value.

Course outline (high level)
This course is structured to guide you from self-assessment through practice and measurement. There are seven sections and seven assessments: a pre-assessment to set a baseline, five core learning sections with short assessments to reinforce concepts, and a post-assessment to measure progress.

Core content sections
Below are the five core sections and what each covers. Each section includes a short assessment to help you practice and confirm learning.

| Section | Focus | Assessment |
| -: | :- | :- |
| Understanding your audience | Identify stakeholders, adapt communication style for different roles, and practice empathy and active listening to build rapport. | Short assessment on identifying audience needs and communication style. |
| Translating technical concepts | Simplify complex ideas, use analogies and metaphors, and emphasize business benefits and outcomes over technical detail. | Exercise: translate a technical concept into a one- to two-sentence business value statement. |
| Storytelling for impact | Build concise narratives (context → problem → action → outcome) that highlight value and make technical topics memorable. | Assessment: craft a brief stakeholder-facing story for a technical change. |
| Handling objections and concerns | Anticipate common objections, find shared values, defuse tension, and keep conversations focused on business goals. | Practice scenarios that test objection-handling and de-escalation techniques. |
| Continuous improvement and feedback | Seek feedback, measure communication impact, and iterate with a growth mindset using practical feedback mechanisms. | Assessment: design a feedback loop to measure communication effectiveness. |

Understanding your audience
This section helps you map stakeholders and tailor your message. You’ll learn to spot what each stakeholder cares about (risk, cost, uptime, time-to-market) and adjust tone, detail, and delivery accordingly.

Translating technical concepts
Focus on clarity: remove unnecessary jargon, use analogies that map to business concepts, and always lead with benefits and outcomes rather than architectural detail. Practice turning technical specs into business-focused summaries.

Storytelling for impact
Use narratives to make technical work relatable: set context, state the problem, describe the action taken, and close with measurable outcomes. Well-structured stories help stakeholders remember and champion your work.

The goal is to combine context, problem, action, and outcome into a concise narrative that stakeholders can understand and act upon.

Handling objections and concerns
Learn to anticipate typical stakeholder questions (cost, timeline, risk, ROI) and prepare clear, non-technical responses. Practice techniques that find common ground, maintain professionalism under pressure, and keep the discussion focused on shared goals.

Continuous improvement and feedback
Build a feedback loop: collect input from stakeholders, measure whether decisions produced the expected business outcome, and iterate on your messaging and delivery. Cultivate a growth mindset and concrete metrics to evaluate communication effectiveness.
