# Introduction

> Overview of a GitHub Enterprise administration course covering identity and access, governance, security, Actions and runners, monitoring, troubleshooting, and exam preparation

Welcome to the GitHub Administration Certification course.

I'm Siddharth Barahalikar, and I'm excited to guide you through the core skills required to confidently administer and manage GitHub Enterprise environments.

As organizations scale their development teams, effective GitHub administration becomes essential. Managing users and access, enforcing security and governance, supporting development workflows, and monitoring enterprise activity all require a solid understanding of GitHub's administration capabilities. This course combines conceptual lessons, guided demonstrations, hands-on labs, and real-world scenarios so you can build practical, job-ready skills for GitHub Enterprise administration.

```bash theme={null}
root@host01 ~/code ➜
```

This course also prepares you for the GH-100 GitHub Administration exam, and includes mock exams to reinforce knowledge and build confidence for certification.

Below is an overview of the topics you will learn and the practical skills you will gain.

You will learn about the GitHub Enterprise hierarchy, organizations, users, licensing, billing, membership management, and organization-level configuration.

Identity and Access Management topics include SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, Enterprise Managed Users (EMUs), and team synchronization with external identity providers.

![A presentation slide titled "Where EMU Identities Come From" showing a strictly formatted username example "xxxx\_acme" and a flow diagram from an "Identity provider" to "Your enterprise" with "no self‑registration" noted. A small circular video of a presenter appears in the lower-right corner.](https://mintcdn.com/kodekloud-c4ac6d9a/s_90rjuRPpIstUzn/images/GitHub-Administration-Certification/Course-Introduction/Introduction/emu-identities-idp-no-self-registration.jpg?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=s_90rjuRPpIstUzn\&q=85\&s=4571d0278e0bb77f543d91cb0824a330)

Enterprise Managed Users (EMUs) are provisioned by your identity provider via SCIM. EMUs cannot self-register — plan your identity and lifecycle workflows (SCIM provisioning, username conventions, and deprovisioning) accordingly.

You'll explore governance and roles such as permission models, team structures, repository access, rulesets, and branch protection.

In the security and compliance area, you'll cover GitHub Advanced Security features, secret scanning, Dependabot, CodeQL, security policies, and application access controls.

GitHub Actions and Runners topics include action governance, reusable workflows, self-hosted runners and runner groups, OIDC-based access, secret management, and cost-optimization strategies for Actions. The course demonstrates best practices for secrets, caching, and runner lifecycle management.

Below is a short example snippet demonstrating the Actions cache usage inside a workflow. This shows a job step that caches the npm cache directory using a key derived from the runner OS and the hash of `package-lock.json` files:

```yaml theme={null}
.github/workflows/ci.yml
steps:
  - uses: actions/cache@v4
    with:
      path: ~/.npm
      key: ${{ runner.os }}-node-${{ hashFiles('**/package-lock.json') }}
```

Next, you'll learn administration and support topics such as troubleshooting GitHub Enterprise environments, using diagnostic tools, analyzing audit logs, and understanding support responsibilities.

Finally, monitoring and optimization topics include enterprise activity, API usage, rate limiting, Actions metrics, audit log streaming, and techniques for optimizing GitHub resources and costs.

![A presentation slide titled "Optimize" showing a 7-step roadmap (Foundation → Identity → Governance → Security → Actions → Operations → Optimize) with checkmarks and a highlighted "7" node. The slide also lists items like audit logs, cost analysis, and adoption metrics next to a rising line/bar chart and a small presenter video thumbnail.](https://mintcdn.com/kodekloud-c4ac6d9a/s_90rjuRPpIstUzn/images/GitHub-Administration-Certification/Course-Introduction/Introduction/optimize-7-step-roadmap-slide.jpg?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=s_90rjuRPpIstUzn\&q=85\&s=61e612f8c62c4624aee5b9d19b9ecb35)

Throughout the course, you will apply what you learn to practical administration scenarios—configuring enterprises and organizations, enforcing security and compliance, operating Actions and runners, troubleshooting incidents, and optimizing costs and operations.

At KodeKloud, we also foster a vibrant community where you can ask questions, share insights, and learn alongside other professionals.

By the end of this course, you will have the practical knowledge and skills to administer, govern, secure, monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize GitHub Enterprise environments.

Study tip: use the included mock GH-100 practice exams and hands-on labs to validate your skills. Focus on identity lifecycle (SAML/SCIM/EMUs), permission models, rulesets and branch protection, Actions governance, and interpreting audit logs — these areas are commonly emphasized on the exam.

Are you ready to take your GitHub administration skills to the next level?
