# Course Introduction

> Introductory programming lesson teaching Python fundamentals through a 90-minute hands-on mini-app covering variables, input, conditionals, loops, lists, functions, debugging, and AI-assisted learning paths

Have you ever wondered how a few lines of code can power a website or guide a chatbot's answers?

It might feel like magic, but under the hood it's just a computer following explicit instructions. From tiny scripts that save you minutes to large programs powering global services, programming is how ideas become tools.

In this lesson, we'll strip away the mystery and teach you how to think and build like a programmer.

Hi — I'm Alan, and I'll be your guide. In just 90 minutes you'll build your very first mini-app: a friendly command-line tool that greets the user and makes simple decisions based on input.

Here's a tiny example showing a command and its output:

```python theme={null}
# Command
print("Hello")
# Output:
# Hello
```

Most importantly, this lesson includes hands-on coding activities built right into the material, designed to get you comfortable with real-world programming tasks.

First, we'll cover why learning to program still matters in the AI era, and how two different AI-assisted learning paths can lead to very different outcomes. This comparison will help you choose the path that best builds lasting skill.

Next, we'll answer: what is a program — and what makes a good program? Then you'll write your very first Python program: run it, see its output, and learn how to diagnose and fix common syntax errors without fear.

After that we'll introduce variables — the program's memory. You'll learn how to:

* store data,
* accept user input,
* perform calculations, and
* craft helpful messages for users.

You'll learn to make programs that choose behavior using conditional statements. We'll practice `if`, `elif`, and `else` to compare values, combine conditions, and branch the program's flow. For example, here's a simple grading decision in pseudocode:

```text theme={null}
INPUT score
IF score >= 90 THEN
    PRINT "Grade: A"
ELSE IF score >= 80 THEN
    PRINT "Grade: B"
ELSE IF score >= 70 THEN
    PRINT "Grade: C"
ELSE
    PRINT "Grade: F"
END IF
```

We'll also teach you how to automate repetitive tasks using `for` loops and `while` loops, and how to use counters so your code can keep running totals.

You'll organize data with lists: creating them, accessing and editing items, and looping through them efficiently.

Then we'll structure your programs into reusable functions: defining and calling functions, passing data in and out, and breaking large problems into smaller, testable pieces. Along the way you'll learn about variable scope — the difference between local and global variables — and why returning values is generally safer than relying on global state.

By the end of the lesson you'll have built a simple tracker and be encouraged to extend it using the skills you've learned — and to bring in AI tools when you're ready to augment your workflow.
