In this lesson, we explore the kubeadm tool—a powerful utility designed to bootstrap a Kubernetes cluster. kubeadm simplifies the process by automating the installation and configuration of essential Kubernetes components, such as the Kube API Server, ETCD, and controllers. It also expertly manages security and certificate handling to ensure seamless communication among all parts of the cluster.

Manually installing individual components on separate nodes, updating configuration files, and setting up certificates is both complex and prone to errors. With kubeadm, these tasks become streamlined and reliable.

Overview of the Setup Process

Follow these steps to create a robust Kubernetes cluster using kubeadm:

  1. Provision Systems or Virtual Machines

    • Start by provisioning multiple systems or virtual machines that will serve as nodes in your Kubernetes cluster. A minimum configuration includes one master node and at least one worker node.
    • In an upcoming demo, we will illustrate how to set up this configuration on a laptop, demonstrating the ease of the process.
  2. Designate Cluster Roles

    • Assign the role of the master to one node while designating the remaining nodes as workers.
  3. Install a Container Runtime

    • Install a container runtime on each node. In this guide, we focus on using ContainerD, so ensure it is installed on all nodes.
  4. Install kubeadm

    • Deploy the kubeadm tool on every node. kubeadm is critical as it bootstraps the cluster by installing and configuring the necessary components in the correct sequence.
  5. Initialize the Master Node

    • Use kubeadm to initialize the master node. This step sets up vital components and configures the master server to manage the cluster effectively.
  6. Configure the Pod Network

    • Before integrating worker nodes into the cluster, verify that the pod network is properly configured. A specialized networking solution is required for reliable communication between the master and worker nodes.
  7. Join Worker Nodes

    • After the pod network is set up, add worker nodes to the cluster by having them join the master node.
  8. Deploy Applications

    • Once all nodes are successfully configured and connected, you can proceed to deploy applications within your Kubernetes cluster.
