Terraform Cloud Plans

Terraform transitioned to a new pricing model in June 2023. In this lesson, we explore the different plans available on HCP Terraform, designed to meet a wide range of requirements from individual users to large enterprises.

Free Plan

The Free Plan is perfect for small teams or individual users. It provides essential features such as remote state storage and runs within a stable remote environment, making it an excellent starting point for managing your infrastructure.

Standard Edition

The Standard Edition builds on the Free Plan with a pay-as-you-go model. It adds key governance tools like cost estimation and policy enforcement. Notably, the first 500 managed resources each month are free, and any resources beyond that are billed on an hourly basis.

Note

For organizations scaling up, the Standard Edition offers a flexible pricing structure allowing you to pay only for additional resources used.

Plus Edition

The Plus Edition includes all the features offered in the Standard Edition along with extra capabilities such as audit logging, continuous validation, and advanced team management tools. This plan is ideal if you require enhanced operational visibility and streamlined team collaboration.

Enterprise Plan

Designed for large organizations, the Enterprise Plan offers advanced security, compliance, and operational features. Key benefits include:

  • Self-Hosted Option: Full control over your operational environment and data privacy.
  • Enhanced Security: Advanced audit logging, stringent access controls, and secure management of sensitive information.
  • Customizability and Integration: Seamless integration with internal systems and workflows.
  • Dedicated Support: Includes technical account management and expedited issue resolution for organizations with rigorous Terraform operations.

These advanced features are particularly beneficial for organizations that need to meet strict regulatory standards.

Pricing and Cost Management

For the Standard Edition, pricing is determined by the number of managed resources. Beyond the initial free allocation of 500 resources, additional resources incur an hourly charge. Organizations can manage billing directly through the HCP interface, allowing you to adjust your plan based on usage and budget.

The image shows a pricing and cost management plan, offering free service for up to 500 resources and a paid plan for over 501 resources.

Advanced Features in Higher-Tier Plans

Higher-tier plans also include several advanced features that streamline and secure your infrastructure management:

  • Remote Operations: Execute Terraform runs on disposable virtual machines managed by HashiCorp, ensuring consistency and reliability during infrastructure provisioning.
  • Private Registry: Securely share and manage your private Terraform modules and providers.
  • Version Control System Integration: Automate Terraform runs in response to code changes in your linked VCS repository, enhancing continuous integration workflows.

The image lists advanced features: Remote Operations, Private Registry, and Version Control System Integration, with sub-features like Disposable VMs, Private Registry, and VCS Integration.

Conclusion

HCP Terraform provides scalable solutions for managing your infrastructure—whether you're part of a small team or a large enterprise, there is a plan that suits your needs.
