Before we start building, make sure you have the following prerequisites installed and a basic development environment configured:
  1. Python
  2. Google ADK (Agent Development Kit)
  3. A bit of SQL
This lesson assumes you already have the prerequisites installed and a basic Python development setup (virtual environment, editor/IDE). If any of these topics are unfamiliar, pause and review the linked resources before continuing — it will save time later.
Quick checklist

1) Python

All course examples and exercises are written in Python. You don’t need to be an expert, but you should be comfortable reading and writing Python — including basic async/await patterns used in some agent tool integrations. Recommended setup:
  • Install Python 3.10 or newer.
  • Use a virtual environment (python -m venv .venv) or pyenv to manage versions.
  • A lightweight editor (VS Code, PyCharm, or similar) with linting will help.
Example: A simple synchronous function that returns a customer record from an in-memory dictionary.
Tip: Some integration points in the course may call async helpers. Familiarity with async def and await will be helpful but not strictly required to follow the basics.

2) Google ADK (Agent Development Kit)

This course builds on Google ADK concepts. You should already understand:
  • What an “agent” is in ADK terms
  • How to bind a model to an agent
  • How to configure and provide tools to an agent
  • How to run and interact with an agent (local or cloud)
If ADK is new to you, take the prerequisite Google ADK course before continuing — it provides the foundational concepts used throughout this curriculum.

3) SQL

Basic SQL literacy is sufficient for this course. You should be able to read simple SELECT statements and understand filtering and projection. Example query (saved as query.sql):
You will often rely on generated queries rather than writing complex SQL by hand, but understanding the basics will help you validate results and debug agent outputs.
